"Summer Vacation Homework Festival in Sky Garden" with cooperation and supervision from Yokohama Future Institute

This summer, the Yokohama Future Institute cooperated with and supervised the "Summer Vacation Homework Festival in Sky Garden," a summer-only event held on the 69th floor of Yokohama Landmark Tower. Over 45 days, the "learning space for a journey through time and space" offered a variety of exhibits and workshops to provide inspiration for elementary school students' homework and independent research.
Members Yokohama National University, DATTARUJIN, Yamaha, and the Mitsubishi Minatomirai Industrial Museum also exhibited, providing children with a wide range of research topics and creating a lively atmosphere.

AI/Future Zone

This is a music production experience corner using AI from DATTARUJIN Co., Ltd. and Yamaha Corporation. By choosing your favorite song from a selection of songs and changing the expression of the vocals and the tone of the instruments, you can experience producing a musical piece for Yokohama's local AI idol, Minato Kurumi.

Yokohama City Song and History Zone

This is a corner where you can learn about the origins of the Yokohama City song and think carefully about the events of the time and the meaning of the lyrics.

Dinosaur Zone

The exhibition included a complete skeleton of an Elasmosaurus, which is believed to have lived in North America during the late Cretaceous period of the Mesozoic era, approximately 8,000 million years ago, and a workshop where visitors could use mallets and chisels to excavate genuine 6,500-million-year-old fossils with their own hands.

Ocean and Space Experiential Learning Zone

Yokohama Hakkeijima Sea Paradise will have an exhibit where you can learn about the relationship between the ocean, living creatures, and humans, depicting the underwater world in three environments: a symbiotic tank, a marine garbage tank, and a seagrass tank. Staff who are in charge of raising the fish daily by cleaning the tanks and feeding the creatures will also be on hand to give explanations.

The workshops changed weekly and offered a variety of fun and educational activities.

"Replica Space Suit Try-On Experience" and "Astronaut Challenge"Participants from the Mitsubishi Minatomirai Technology Museum tried out replica spacesuits for extravehicular activity, carried weighted backpacks to simulate life support equipment, and attempted the challenge of carrying a ping-pong ball using triple-layered gloves, all of which simulated the activities of an astronaut.

"Sowing the seeds of curiosity"Students from Yokohama National University imitated the survival strategies of plants, learned about the workings of the human body and robotics technology, and made slime together with current doctoral students.

All elementary school students who attended were given a "Summer Homework Worksheet" for independent research, allowing them to write down any discoveries or hints they gained at the event and use them for their independent research when they returned home.

The view was so spectacular that it made us forget the heat. It was impressive to see the curious elementary school students having fun while learning at every exhibit and workshop. We hope that we were able to provide some inspiration for their summer vacation independent research projects and provide some inspiration for learning. In light of this project, which stimulated the children's curiosity along with the view from the sixth floor, Future Yokohama Institute will continue to work with the local community to create diverse learning opportunities and support the next generation's desire to explore.
